Changes to Vitamin B12 Prescriptions at Lancaster Medical Practice

Posted on:

At Lancaster Medical Practice, we are committed to ensuring NHS resources are used effectively for the benefit of all our patients. In line with updated NHS guidance across South Cumbria and Lancashire, we want to inform patients that vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) supplements will no longer be prescribed by GPs.

What This Means for You

If you have been receiving vitamin B12 tablets on prescription, you will need to purchase them over the counter instead. Oral vitamin B12 supplements are widely available at pharmacies, supermarkets, and health food stores at an affordable price.

Maintaining Your Vitamin B12 Levels

Most people can maintain healthy B12 levels through a balanced diet. Foods rich in vitamin B12 include:

  • Meat
  • Fish
  • Milk and dairy products (cheese, eggs)
  • Fortified breakfast cereals and soya products

If your doctor or clinical pharmacist has advised you to continue taking oral B12 tablets, please ensure you purchase a supplement containing 1000mcg (1mg or 1000µg) of cyanocobalamin. You can find more details on vitamin B12 and dietary sources, on:

We kindly ask that you finish any remaining prescribed vitamin B12 tablets you have at home.
